Thailand
Hundreds of vertical limestone monoliths bursting from green water like dragon's teeth.
The limestone monoliths rise from green water like something geological that forgot to stop. Hundreds of them. Vertical. Some barely wider than a longtail boat. Phang Nga Bay in southern Thailand is one of the most visually dramatic seascapes on earth — a forest of stone columns growing out of the Andaman Sea.
Phang Nga Bay is a 400-square-kilometre marine area in the Strait of Malacca between Phuket and the Thai mainland. Over forty karst towers — some reaching 300 metres — rise vertically from the shallow green water, many hollow with hidden sea caves and collapsed lagoons (hongs) accessible only at low tide by kayak. Khao Phing Kan — known as James Bond Island since The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed there in 1974 — draws the largest crowds, but dozens of other formations remain virtually unvisited. The bay's northern reaches include Koh Panyee, a Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts. Luxury floating villas, boutique liveaboard boats, and dawn kayak expeditions offer ways to experience the bay beyond the day-trip circuit.
Couple
Dawn kayak trips through the karst towers — entering sea caves as the tide drops and emerging into hidden lagoons — create private, cinematic moments. Luxury floating villas offer overnight stays inside the bay.
Friends
Sea kayaking expeditions, island-hopping by longtail, and the sheer scale of the karst formations make Phang Nga Bay a group adventure that photographs from every angle.
Family
The calm, sheltered waters make longtail boat tours safe for children. Koh Panyee's stilt village and the bay's geological drama keep young imaginations engaged without requiring physical exertion.
