The street keeps its cart ruts worn into the stone. A bakery oven stands blackened and ready, loaves carbonised inside. Graffiti on a tavern wall still advertises a gladiator fight held two thousand years ago.
Pompeii vanished under metres of ash when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, and the burial preserved a working Roman city in unmatched detail across some 44 hectares, two-thirds of it now excavated. Streets lead past the forum, bath complexes, frescoed houses and the lupanar with its unambiguous wall paintings. The plaster casts of the dead, a technique the archaeologist Fiorelli invented in 1863 by filling voids left in the ash, remain the site's most confronting encounter and are presented as human evidence, not spectacle. The digging never stops: a snack counter unearthed in 2020 still held food residue in its serving pots.
