Pompeii is a Roman city in Campania, Italy, buried under four to six metres of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. The eruption preserved buildings, frescoes, and objects in a state of detail unmatched by any other archaeological site. The site covers 44 hectares, of which roughly two-thirds have been excavated, revealing an amphitheatre, forum, bath complexes, private homes with intact wall paintings, and a lupanar whose frescoes leave little to the imagination. Plaster casts of the victims, made by pouring gypsum into the voids left by decomposed bodies in the ash, remain among the most confronting objects in archaeology. New excavations in Regio V continue to uncover rooms and artefacts — in 2020, a thermopolium (ancient fast-food counter) was found with food still in the serving pots.
