Japan
Alpine wildflowers blooming at sea level on a wind-battered island at Japan's edge.
The wildflowers should not be here. Three hundred alpine species that normally grow above 2,000 metres bloom at sea level on Rebun, a wind-lashed sliver of land at the northern tip of Hokkaido. The island sits closer to Sakhalin than to Sapporo, and the cold Liman Current keeps it cool enough for botanical impossibilities.
Rebun Island is classified as one of Japan's '100 Flowering Places' and is a designated national park. The eight-hour Cape Trail along the western coast traverses some of the most dramatic coastal hiking in Japan, with cliffs dropping directly into the Sea of Japan and views to Rishiri Island's volcanic cone across the strait. The island's fishing communities harvest sea urchin and kelp from the surrounding waters, and the uni served at harbourside stalls is considered among the finest in Hokkaido. Rebun's population is under 2,500, with no traffic lights and no chain stores.
Solo
Eight hours on the Cape Trail with nothing but wind, wildflowers, and ocean. The island is remote enough that you'll have long stretches entirely to yourself.
Couple
Minshuku guesthouses serve fresh crab and uni at communal tables where you eat with the fishermen. The shared simplicity is the luxury.
Sea urchin so fresh it tastes of the ocean floor, cracked open at the harbour.
Atka mackerel grilled whole with salt — the island's staple, impossibly rich.
