Rusinga Island

The boat crosses from the mainland in twenty minutes, but the pace shift is immediate. Rusinga is quiet — fishing nets drying on the rocks, children playing on the shore, and somewhere beneath your feet, the fossilised remains of creatures that walked here 18 million years ago.
Rusinga Island sits in the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, connected to the mainland by a causeway. The island gained scientific fame when Mary Leakey discovered the skull of Proconsul africanus here in 1948 — an 18-million-year-old primate fossil that reshaped understanding of ape and human evolution. Rusinga was also the birthplace of Tom Mboya, one of Kenya's most influential independence-era politicians, whose mausoleum stands on the island's western shore. The island's fishing communities rely on Lake Victoria's tilapia and omena, and the daily rhythm centres on the morning catch and the market that follows. Bird life is prolific — fish eagles, herons, and cormorants patrol the shoreline, while the island's rocky outcrops shelter monitor lizards and hyraxes.
