The causeway crossing takes minutes, but the pace shift is immediate. Rusinga is quiet — nets drying across the rocks, children on the shore, and somewhere beneath your feet the fossilised remains of creatures that lived here eighteen million years ago.
Rusinga sits in Lake Victoria's Winam Gulf, and palaeontology made it famous: in 1948 Mary Leakey lifted the skull of Proconsul from its rock — an eighteen-million-year-old primate that reshaped the study of ape and human origins, and the island's fossil beds have kept giving ever since. Kenya's modern history rests here too: Tom Mboya, the independence-era statesman whose assassination in 1969 shook the nation, lies in a mausoleum on the western shore. Day to day, Rusinga runs on the lake — tilapia and omena landed at dawn, the market that follows, fish eagles patrolling the shoreline. Deep time underfoot, present tense on the water.
