The road climbs through hydrangea-lined hedgerows until the caldera rim falls away and twin lakes fill the view — one emerald, one sapphire, divided by a narrow bridge of land. Morning mist clings to the crater walls, filtering the light into something softer, greener, entirely unlike mainland Portugal.
Sete Cidades fills a caldera roughly five kilometres across at São Miguel's western end — collapsed tens of millennia ago — and it is an inhabited landscape, not just a photograph: a village of a few hundred people lives on the crater floor among working roads and green walls of Macaronesian vegetation. The twin lakes owe their colours to algae and depth rather than to the legend of the blue-eyed princess and green-eyed shepherd whose tears supposedly filled them, though the island tells the story anyway. Vista do Rei on the rim gives the iconic panorama, the 11.7-kilometre Mata do Canário trail follows the ridge between crater and open ocean before dropping to the village, with cloud moving through the bowl below, and the lakes take kayaks and swimmers when the weather works.
