South Korea
An intact eighteenth-century fortress wall wrapping five kilometres around a bustling modern metropolis.
The wall does not end. It wraps — five and a half kilometres of stone, brick, and watchtower, completely encircling a modern city centre that simply grew up inside an 18th-century military fortress.
Hwaseong Fortress is a complete 5.7-kilometre UNESCO World Heritage wall encircling central Suwon, built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo. What makes it exceptional is not just its completeness but its documentation — the Hwaseong Seongyeok, a detailed construction manual published immediately after completion, records every technique, measurement, and material used. The fortress integrates Korean, Chinese, and European military architecture, reflecting the period's international exchange. The wall walk takes approximately two hours, passing guard towers, command posts, and archery platforms. Inside the walls, Suwon's galbi restaurant district clusters along streets where the marinated beef short rib dish originated. The fortress hosts regular cultural events including archery demonstrations and night illuminations.
