Umluj is a coastal town on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, in the Madinah region. The offshore islands — low, sandy, ringed with coral — are the primary draw, reached by licensed boats from the harbour. The coral gardens begin close to shore, and on calm days the clarity lets snorkellers read the reef from the surface. The town itself is small and largely unmodernised, its fishing harbour still the economic centre, even as the Red Sea coast's giga-projects rise to the north — for now, Umluj keeps the character of a place the wider world has not yet noticed.
