Valia Calda

Bears roam black pine stands in Greece's last primeval forest — no road in or out.

#Wilderness#Solo#Adrenaline#Wandering#Eco

There is no road in. The trail from Perivoli or Avdella enters through black pine forest so dense the canopy blocks the sky, and the valley below is silent except for the river. Brown bears leave tracks in the mud along the Arkoudorema, and the trees — some over four hundred years old — have never been cleared by machinery.

Valia Calda is the only national park in Greece without a road entering it — all access is on foot. The park protects the last primeval black pine forest in Greece, where trees estimated at over 400 years old grow undisturbed and the forest floor has never been mechanically cleared. Brown bears, grey wolves, golden eagles, and Eurasian otters inhabit the Arkoudorema (Bear River) catchment, and bear sightings are regularly reported by hikers. The river is cold enough year-round to hold native brown trout, and the entire catchment has been free of pesticide use since the park was established. There are no facilities, no marked camping areas, and no services inside the park — visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for wilderness conditions. The nearest provisions are in Metsovo, a mountain town known for its smoked cheese and spit-roasted pork.

Mountain tea from herbs growing wild at the treeline, brewed on a camp stove if you carry one.
