India
A high Himalayan basin carpeted in purple rhododendrons and split by a steaming sulphur river.
The rhododendrons explode in April — purple, crimson, pink, and white, twenty-four species blooming simultaneously across a valley floor that steams where a sulphur river cuts through the snow. Yumthang is what happens when an alpine meadow decides to show off.
Yumthang Valley in Sikkim sits at approximately 3,560 metres in the upper reaches of the Teesta River basin, flanked by snow peaks that remain white through June. The valley is known as the Sikkim Valley of Flowers — in spring, over 24 species of rhododendron bloom across the meadows and hillsides in a display of colour that draws botanists and trekkers alike. A sulphur-heated hot spring steams in the valley centre, its mineral-rich water warm enough to bathe in even when surrounded by snow. The road from Lachung climbs through temperate and subalpine forest, crossing treeline into the open basin. Yak herders move through the valley in summer, their stone shelters and grazing animals dotting the upper slopes. Beyond Yumthang, the road continues to Yumesamdong (Zero Point), where snow lingers year-round.
