Zagori

The stone villages appear one by one as the road climbs — grey slate roofs, arched packhorse bridges spanning green gorges, and then the Vikos Gorge itself, a vertical slot in the earth so narrow and deep it seems impossible. Mist gathers in the gorge at dawn and lifts slowly past the village of Monodendri, where breakfast is eaten on a stone terrace above the void.

The 46 villages of Zagori maintained elected self-governing councils under Ottoman rule, preserving a degree of autonomy that shaped both their architecture and civic identity. The Vikos Gorge, listed in the Guinness World Records as the deepest gorge relative to its width, drops 900 metres at its narrowest point — a marked hiking trail descends from Monodendri to the riverbed and climbs out at Vikos village. Sixteen packhorse bridges built between the 17th and 19th centuries span the rivers of the region; they were constructed without mortar using dry-stone arch techniques and have survived intact. The villages of Mikro and Megalo Papigo sit beneath the Astraka limestone towers, where multi-pitch climbing routes begin from the village paths. Guesthouses converted from traditional stone mansions offer wood-fire heating in winter and cool stone interiors in summer.
