Greece
Wade into the ice-cold River of the Dead — Greeks believed it flowed to Hades.
The water is so cold it knocks the breath from your chest when you wade in — turquoise, clear to the riverbed, flowing through a white limestone gorge the ancient Greeks believed led to the underworld. The Acheron is not a metaphor; it is a real river that runs cold year-round, and the ford at Glyki is exactly where mythology said the living could approach the boundary of Hades.
The Acheron was identified in ancient literature as one of the rivers of the underworld, and the Necromanteion at Ephyra — five kilometres south of the river's navigable stretch — was the Oracle of the Dead, where supplicants consulted the spirits of the departed before major decisions. The Skala Tzavaraias gorge hike runs two kilometres through the canyon before the river widens into a cold, clear pool surrounded by white limestone walls. The ford at Glyki is waist-deep in spring and ankle-deep by August, with a current in the upper gorge section strong enough to wade against. The river is fed from mountain springs and stays cold throughout summer, creating a temperature contrast with the warm Epirus air that is noticeable even on the hottest days. Kayaking and river trekking operators run guided trips through the gorge section.
