Greece
Forty-four people, one taverna, one church — a speck of Aegean that time forgot.
The ferry pulls alongside a concrete quay barely wider than the boat, and a handful of whitewashed buildings look back at you — this is the whole town. Forty-four people live here. There is one taverna, one church, one shop that doubles as the port authority, and a quiet so total it registers as physical pressure in the ears.
Arki has 44 permanent residents, no cars, no paved roads, and one general store that doubles as the port authority. The ferry stops only if someone has booked passage — otherwise it passes the island without slowing. The main settlement clusters around the quay, and a ruined Italian naval fortress from World War II sits on the island's highest point, unrestored and unsignposted. The tiny islet of Marathi, connected to Arki by a sandbar at low tide, has two tavernas serving the yachting community with food cooked from whatever the morning supply boat brought. The anchorage is sheltered and the water is warm and clear. There is no tourism infrastructure beyond the tavernas and a few rented rooms.
Solo
An island of forty-four people with one taverna and no agenda — eat when the kitchen opens, swim when the heat demands it, leave when the ferry comes.
Couple
The smallest inhabited island you will ever visit — communal taverna meals, a sandbar walk to Marathi, and evenings so quiet you hear the sea from bed.
Whatever Manolis has cooked — usually goat, fish, or beans, served to everyone at one communal hour.
Cold beer from the only fridge on the island, drunk on the only quay, watching the only ferry leave.
