Bafa Lake
A Byzantine monastery on a boulder-strewn island in a lake that was once an Aegean inlet.
Boulders the size of houses line the shore of Bafa Lake in Turkey's central Aegean, and on an island just offshore, a Byzantine monastery sits among them as though placed by a deliberate hand. The water is flat and warm. Herons stand motionless in the shallows. Two thousand years ago, this was open sea — the Aegean itself, lapping at a harbour wall.
Bafa Lake was once an inlet of the Aegean Sea, sealed off gradually over two millennia as the Meander River deposited silt across the channel. The ancient port city of Herakleia under Latmos sits partly submerged at the lake's edge, its defensive walls and agora still traceable on foot. The island monastery dates to the Byzantine era and is reachable by local boatmen on request. In the Latmos mountains above the shore, Bronze Age rock paintings survive on exposed cliff faces, accessible only via unmarked footpaths. Over 200 bird species have been recorded at the lake, including Dalmatian pelicans — one of Europe's rarest breeding populations. Accommodation is limited to a handful of family-run pansiyons along the southern shore.

Bafa rewards the curious and unhurried. Hire a local boatman to reach the monastery island, track down the Bronze Age rock paintings on foot, and eat fried lake fish at a pansiyon where you may be the only guest.
