India
Teardrop coral atolls where bioluminescent plankton washes up on uncrowded sand in the Arabian Sea.
The boat runs aground on sand. There is no jetty. You step out into knee-deep turquoise water and walk to shore. The atoll has one resort, zero roads, and a shoreline that glows neon blue with bioluminescent plankton after dark.
Bangaram Atoll is a teardrop-shaped coral island in India's Lakshadweep archipelago, reachable only by boat from Agatti Island. The entire atoll measures roughly 120 acres, fringed by a coral reef that encloses a shallow lagoon where reef sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles patrol. The single resort on the island operates without roads โ paths through coconut palms connect the cottages to the beach. Bioluminescent dinoflagellate plankton illuminate the waterline at night, turning footsteps in the shallows into pulses of blue light. Snorkelling and diving from the beach accesses the house reef directly โ no boat required. The Lakshadweep islands require a permit for visitors, and the limited infrastructure means the atoll rarely hosts more than a few dozen guests at any time.
