Loch an Eilein is a freshwater loch in the heart of the Rothiemurchus Estate, its island castle a medieval stronghold linked to the Wolf of Badenoch, long since softened into romantic ruin. Ospreys nested on the castle until about 1900, and their return to Speyside half a century later became one of conservation's celebrated victories — they fish the loch again now, keeping their own hours. The circular shore walk threads Caledonian pine forest where nothing speaks but birdsong, wind and the splash of a diving bird, the Scots pines among the oldest native woodland remnants in Scotland, their bark smelling of vanilla and resin. It is the Cairngorms at their gentlest — which is just why it repays the slowest possible pace.
