Loch an Eilein

A ruined castle sits on a small island in the loch, unreachable except when winter ice is thick enough to walk — and even then, you'd hesitate. Loch an Eilein lies within Rothiemurchus Forest in the Cairngorms, where wolf-grey Caledonian pines stand older than the castle and the water holds a stillness that makes reflections indistinguishable from reality.

Loch an Eilein is a freshwater loch in the heart of Rothiemurchus Estate, its island castle a 13th-century Wolf of Badenoch stronghold now reduced to picturesque ruin. Ospreys nested on the castle for decades — their return to Scotland after a century of absence was one of conservation's great victories. The circular walk through the surrounding Caledonian pine forest follows a loch shore where the only sounds are birdsong, wind in the pines, and the occasional splash of a diving bird. The trees themselves — Scots pines with bark that smells of vanilla and resin — are among the oldest native woodland remnants in Scotland.
