India
A protected indigenous reserve where hot springs bubble beneath the sheer ice wall of Kanchenjunga.
Hot water bubbles from the ground. Above it, the ice wall of Kanchenjunga rises sheer and white. The temperature difference between your feet and the air on your face is forty degrees. Dzongu is the Lepcha homeland — sacred, protected, and almost entirely unknown.
Dzongu in North Sikkim is a protected area designated as the exclusive homeland of the Lepcha people, one of the earliest communities in the eastern Himalayas. Access requires a special permit even for Indian citizens. The reserve sits beneath the south face of Kanchenjunga (8,586 metres), and hot springs at its lower elevations create a surreal contrast — warm mineral water flowing through subtropical cardamom plantations in the shadow of glaciers. Waterfalls crash through dense rhododendron and magnolia forest, transitioning to alpine meadow at higher elevations within a single day's walk. The Lepcha consider Dzongu their ancestral paradise and resist commercial development — tourism infrastructure is minimal, accommodation is in village homes, and the experience is defined by the community's hospitality rather than any organised programme.
Solo
Dzongu's permit requirements and minimal infrastructure attract solo travellers seeking genuine remoteness and community-based cultural immersion.
