Mount Etna is Europe's tallest active volcano at approximately 3,357 metres, though its summit height shifts with each eruption. Located on Sicily's eastern coast above Catania, Etna has been erupting intermittently for around 500,000 years. The volcano supports distinct ecological zones: Mediterranean scrubland at its base, dense birch and beech forests on its middle slopes, and barren lava desert near the summit. Etna's mineral-rich volcanic soil produces some of Sicily's most distinctive wines, particularly the Nerello Mascalese grape, which yields reds with a nervous acidity found nowhere else on the island. The town of Bronte, on Etna's western flank, cultivates the prized pistachios that appear in everything from pesto to gelato across Sicily.
