Gocta Falls in Peru's Amazonas Region is one of the tallest waterfalls in the world, yet its height was only formally measured and published in 2005. Local communities in Cocachimba village had always known it existed — outsiders simply never came. The five-hour round-trip trail passes through cloud forest rich in endemic species. Guides are all local villagers who manage the trail and guesthouses. The pool at the base creates a cold mist powerful enough to soak clothing within minutes of approach.
