A steaming, sapphire-blue thermal pool hidden inside a deep, jagged lava fissure.

You duck through a crack in the lava and the world changes. Below, a sapphire pool steams inside a cave of jagged black rock, the water lit from within by some trick of geothermal chemistry and refracted daylight. Grjótagjá near Lake Mývatn in north Iceland is a hidden thermal spring that feels less like a geological feature and more like a secret kept by the earth itself.

Grjótagjá is a small lava cave containing a geothermal hot spring, formed within the same volcanic fissure system that runs through the Mývatn region. The water temperature fluctuates between 43°C and 46°C — it rose dangerously during the Krafla volcanic eruptions of 1975–1984, when underground magma movements superheated the pool well beyond safe bathing limits. Temperatures have since cooled, though bathing is officially discouraged due to unpredictable geothermal shifts. The cave gained wider fame as a filming location for Game of Thrones, though its significance in Icelandic culture predates that by centuries — local farmers used it as a bathing spot for generations. The surrounding Mývatn region offers Iceland's densest concentration of volcanic features: pseudocraters, lava formations, hot springs, and fumaroles within a few square kilometres.

Couple

The intimacy of ducking into a hidden cave and finding a glowing sapphire pool — Grjótagjá is Iceland's most romantic geological secret, even as a look-don't-swim experience.

Visiting alone, without the chatter of a group, lets you absorb the cave's atmosphere fully — the steam, the glow, the crack of light from above. It rewards quiet attention.
