Diamond Beach in southeast Iceland is where Vatnajökull glacier's cast-offs wash ashore and sit, glittering, until the sun takes them back.
Diamond Beach is the shoreline strip adjacent to Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where icebergs that have calved from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier drift out to sea on the Jökulsá river, only to be pushed back onto the black volcanic sand by the Atlantic surf. Each ice piece is unique — some crystal clear, some striated with centuries of trapped volcanic ash, others a deep blue from compressed air being squeezed out over millennia. The contrast of translucent ice on jet-black sand creates one of Iceland's most photographed scenes. The beach is accessible year-round directly from the Ring Road, though winter light — low, golden, and fleeting — produces the most dramatic translucence. The adjacent lagoon itself is Iceland's deepest lake, reaching 248 metres as the glacier continues to retreat.
