Steam rises from iron-rich hot springs beneath date palms, the water rust-orange against green fronds and tawny desert beyond. The air is warm, still, and faintly mineral. Somewhere in the palm groves, a donkey brays — the same sound that greeted the Roman soldiers garrisoned here two millennia ago.
Bahariya Oasis is the gateway to Egypt's Western Desert, sitting in a depression surrounded by black basalt hills roughly 370 kilometres south-west of Cairo. In 1996, a donkey stumbled into a hole near the oasis and uncovered the Valley of the Golden Mummies — a Graeco-Roman necropolis containing thousands of gilded mummies, one of the largest archaeological finds of the twentieth century. The oasis has been continuously inhabited since at least the Middle Kingdom, and its hot springs, date groves, and olive orchards still sustain a community that moves at its own pace. Bahariya serves as the staging point for 4x4 expeditions into the White Desert and Black Desert, making it both a destination and a departure point for deeper exploration.

The guesthouses are welcoming, the hot springs are communal, and the pace is slow enough to decompress completely. Solo travellers can easily join group tours departing for the White Desert.
