Steam punches through fractured rock along the western shore while a million flamingos ripple pink across the alkaline shallows. The air at Lake Bogoria carries the faint tang of sulphur, and the ground underfoot is warm. Geysers erupt without warning — plumes of boiling water shooting two metres high from cracks in the earth.
Lake Bogoria is a narrow alkaline lake in Kenya's Rift Valley, flanked by steep escarpments and fed by over 200 hot springs along its western shore. The reserve protects Kenya's most active geothermal zone — the Loburu geysers are among the most vigorous in East Africa. Since Lake Nakuru's water levels shifted in the 2010s, Bogoria has become the primary congregation point for lesser flamingos in Kenya, hosting populations that sometimes exceed two million birds. The lake sits at 990 metres elevation and stretches 34 kilometres long but barely 3.5 kilometres wide, creating a landscape where geothermal fury and avian spectacle exist within arm's reach of each other. Greater kudus, one of Kenya's rarest antelopes, browse the acacia thickets on the surrounding hillsides.
