Steam punches through fractured rock along the shore while flamingos ripple pink across the alkaline shallows. The air carries a faint tang of sulphur and the ground underfoot is warm. The geysers erupt on their own schedule — columns of boiling water flung from cracks in the earth.
Bogoria is a narrow soda lake pressed under a steep Rift escarpment — 34 kilometres long, barely three and a half wide — and it is Kenya's geothermal showpiece: hot springs by the dozen and true geysers, boiling and spouting along the Loburu shore. Since Lake Nakuru's waters shifted in the 2010s, the lesser flamingos have made Bogoria their great gathering place in Kenya, filming the shallows pink a hundred thousand birds and more when the algae bloom. Greater kudu, one of Kenya's harder-won antelope sightings, browse the acacia slopes above. Geothermal fury and avian spectacle within arm's reach of each other — keep the arm back from the springs.
