Australia
A lake so bubblegum-pink it looks digitally altered, trapped on an island in the Southern Ocean.
It is bubblegum pink. Not at sunrise. Not in certain light. Always. Lake Hillier sits on Middle Island off Esperance, its colour so vivid that every photograph looks manipulated. It is not. The pink comes from organisms that thrive in conditions hostile to almost everything else.
Lake Hillier on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago is a saline lake approximately 600 metres long, notable for its vivid, permanent pink colour. Unlike other pink lakes that shift with seasons, Lake Hillier remains pink year-round โ the colour attributed to a combination of the algae Dunaliella salina and halophilic bacteria in the salt crust. The lake is surrounded by dense eucalyptus forest on one side and the Southern Ocean on the other, creating a striking contrast of pink, green, and blue visible from the air. Access is primarily by scenic flight from Esperance, as the island is a nature reserve with limited ground access. The colour was first recorded by Matthew Flinders in 1802.
