Japan
A black crow castle reflected in its moat against a wall of three-thousand-metre alps.
The castle is black. While most Japanese castles were rebuilt in white plaster after the wars, Matsumoto's original keep has stood since the 1590s in lacquered black and white — earning it the name 'Crow Castle.' On clear days, the Northern Alps reflect in the moat behind it, doubling the mountain wall in still water.
Matsumoto Castle is one of only five castles in Japan with an original keep, its six-storey wooden interior untouched by fire, earthquake, or wartime bombing. The city sits at the gateway to the Kamikochi alpine valley and the Northern Alps, making it a natural staging point for mountain adventures. Nawate-dōri, a folk-art market street along the Metoba River, is lined with frog statues, antique shops, and taiyaki stalls. Matsumoto's kura storehouses — formerly used for miso and sake storage — have been converted into craft breweries, jazz bars, and galleries that give the city a cultural depth disproportionate to its size.

Family
The castle's interior is a climbing adventure for children — steep ladders between floors, arrow slits to peer through, and a panoramic top floor.
