Japan
Columnar basalt gorge where the sun goddess hid and the night dance never stopped.
The gorge drops sheer into emerald water between walls of columnar basalt so regular they look carved. But Takachiho's real power is mythological: this is where Amaterasu, the sun goddess, hid in a cave and plunged the world into darkness. The kagura dances performed nightly at the shrine have been re-enacting her coaxing-out for over a thousand years.
Takachiho Gorge was carved by the Gokase River through volcanic basalt deposited by an eruption of nearby Mount Aso approximately 120,000 years ago. The gorge walls rise up to 100 metres, with the Manai Falls dropping 17 metres into the narrow channel where visitors navigate rental rowing boats. Takachiho Shrine hosts nightly yokagura performances — a condensed version of the 33-act sacred dance cycle that, in its full form, runs from dusk to dawn during the November festival. The cave of Amano Iwato, where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden, lies across the Iwato River at Amano Iwato Shrine and can only be viewed with a priest as guide.
Couple
Rowing through the gorge beneath Manai Falls, then attending the kagura dance by lantern light at the shrine, creates an evening that moves from natural awe to spiritual intimacy.
Solo
The mythological weight of Takachiho rewards solo contemplation. Walking to Amano Iwato Shrine with a priest, then sitting through the nightly kagura in a small audience, connects you to something older than tourism.
