Mfangano Island
Four-thousand-year-old rock paintings stare from cave walls on an island in Africa's largest lake.
The boat clears the headland and the rock paintings appear — ochre and white figures staring from a cave wall on a green hillside above the water. They have been here for roughly four thousand years. Below them Lake Victoria lies flat against the horizon, and Mfangano smells of woodsmoke, fresh fish and red laterite paths.
Mfangano rises out of Kenyan Lake Victoria about twenty kilometres off the mainland, its Mawanga and Kwitone caves painted with geometric suns and concentric circles attributed to Twa hunter-gatherers — art that predates Bantu settlement in the region by millennia. The island beneath the art is a working fishing world: tens of thousands of islanders live from tilapia and omena, boats going out at dusk with lamps to call the shoals. Footpaths do the work of roads, the hilly interior keeps patches of old forest, and everything arrives and leaves by boat from Mbita. Rock art above, silver fish below — four thousand years of people looking at the same water.
