Mfangano Island sits in the Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria, roughly 20 kilometres from the mainland shore. The island's Mawanga and Kwitone cave sites contain rock art attributed to the Twa people, dating back approximately 4,000 years — geometric patterns and concentric circles painted in red and white pigment that predate Bantu settlement in the region. Mfangano supports a fishing community of around 30,000 people, most relying on tilapia and omena harvests from the lake. The island's hilly terrain rises to over 1,600 metres at its peak, supporting patches of remnant forest. Access is by boat from Mbita Point, and the island has no tarmac roads.
