Waterfalls stair the gorge down to a monastery where pilgrims climb to a footprint in stone.
Bells from the Holy Trinity monastery reach the ravine in fragments, mixed with the sound of falling water. The stream drops towards the Dniester over shelf after shelf of pale rock under a closed roof of leaves. On the crag above, pilgrims climb to a mark pressed into the stone.
Saharna is Moldovan pilgrimage at full strength. The Holy Trinity monastery, founded in 1777, keeps the relics of St Macarie and draws believers from across the country; on Grimidon rock above it, tradition tells of a monk who saw the Virgin shining on the summit and found a footprint in the stone where she had stood. An older hermitage survives in the cliff itself, its rock-cut cells on record since the seventeenth century and dated by some far earlier. A short pine-forest trail leads to the main waterfall, and the gorge path strings the smaller cascades together on wet limestone that asks for shoes with grip.

Walk the gorge at a contemplative pace and let the monastery set the tone; give services and pilgrims their space.

Climb to the Grimidon viewpoint for the river bend, then book a Dniester-bank table at Lalova for the way home.
Family
The pine trail to the main waterfall is brief enough for young legs; keep children close where the rock runs wet.
Friends
A group can string the cascades, the rock hermitage and the viewpoint into one loop and still make lunch.
