The first thing you notice in Santana is the colour. Triangular thatched houses — casas de colmo — stand in rows of deep red, blue, and yellow against the impossibly green slopes of northern Madeira. Mist drifts through terraced gardens where bananas and passion fruit grow at an altitude most crops refuse.
Santana sits on Madeira's north coast at roughly 400 metres elevation, a municipality that has preserved its iconic A-frame houses as living heritage rather than museum pieces. The triangular structures, originally built by farmers using local materials — thatched roofs of wheat straw and walls of wood — date back centuries and remain unique to this part of the island. The surrounding countryside offers levada walks through laurel forest, with the Queimadas Forest Park serving as a gateway to some of Madeira's most celebrated trails. Santana also hosts the Madeira Folklore Festival in July, one of the island's largest cultural gatherings.
