Portugal
Triangular thatched A-frame houses in primary colours cluster on green slopes above the cloud line.
The first thing you notice in Santana is the colour. Triangular thatched houses — casas de colmo — stand in rows of deep red, blue, and yellow against the impossibly green slopes of northern Madeira. Mist drifts through terraced gardens where bananas and passion fruit grow at an altitude most crops refuse.
Santana sits on Madeira's north coast at roughly 400 metres elevation, a municipality that has preserved its iconic A-frame houses as living heritage rather than museum pieces. The triangular structures, originally built by farmers using local materials — thatched roofs of wheat straw and walls of wood — date back centuries and remain unique to this part of the island. The surrounding countryside offers levada walks through laurel forest, with the Queimadas Forest Park serving as a gateway to some of Madeira's most celebrated trails. Santana also hosts the Madeira Folklore Festival in July, one of the island's largest cultural gatherings.
Couple
Santana offers a quieter side of Madeira, where morning walks through terraced hillsides end at village cafés with nobody else around. The combination of cultural visits and countryside calm makes it an unhurried base for two.
Family
Children are fascinated by the toy-like thatched houses, and the gentle pace of Santana suits families with younger kids. Nearby trails through Queimadas Forest Park are flat and manageable, following levadas through moss-draped laurel forest.
Espetada and carne de vinha d'alhos — pork marinated in wine, garlic, and bay, a Madeiran staple.
Madeiran honey cake and local fruit — passion fruit, custard apple, and bananas from the hillside gardens.
