United Arab Emirates
Arabian oryx and cheetahs roaming a private island where a 1,400-year-old monastery hides in the scrub.
The morning game drive starts before sunrise. Arabian oryx materialise from the scrubland in twos and threes, their white coats catching the first light as cheetahs stretch somewhere in the distance. By mid-morning, you are standing inside the excavated remains of a 1,400-year-old Christian monastery, its stone walls still holding the outline of rooms where monks once slept. The Gulf laps at both shores.
Sir Bani Yas Island is a natural island off Abu Dhabi's western coast, transformed into the UAE's largest wildlife reserve with over 13,000 free-roaming animals including Arabian oryx, gazelle, cheetah, hyena, and giraffe. A Nestorian Christian monastery dating to approximately 600 AD was discovered here in 1992, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in the Gulf region. The island spans 87 square kilometres, with accommodation ranging from luxury beach villas to eco-safari lodges where animals wander past morning terraces. Calm Gulf waters allow snorkelling, kayaking, and paddleboarding directly from the resort beaches.
Couple
A private beach villa, sunrise wildlife drives, and afternoon kayaking in warm Gulf water — Sir Bani Yas offers seclusion and natural spectacle without ever feeling remote. Sunset dinners on the sand feel genuinely private.
Family
Children watch oryx and giraffe from open-sided 4x4s at dawn, then snorkel and paddleboard from the resort beach after lunch. The monastery visit adds a layer of history that sticks. Every age group leaves with stories.
