The ladder descends thirty metres through a wall of ferns and hanging roots before your feet touch water. To Sua is not a swimming hole. It is a collapsed volcanic sinkhole on Upolu's south coast, carved by millennia of ocean erosion through porous basalt. Two adjacent pits — To Sua and To Le Sua — sit within a manicured garden of tropical flowers and coconut palms maintained by the local village. The water temperature stays warm year-round, fed silently by the tide through lava tubes that honeycomb the coastal rock shelf. A sturdy wooden ladder bolted into the cliff face provides the only access. The site is community-owned, with entry fees funding the gardens and infrastructure that make this geological oddity safely accessible.
