The Undara Lava Tubes in north Queensland were formed by a single eruption of the Undara shield volcano approximately 190,000 years ago. Lava flowed through the landscape for 160 kilometres, the outer crust hardening while the molten interior drained away, leaving hollow tubes up to 20 metres in diameter. Some collapsed sections now host rainforest pockets — isolated ecosystems surrounded by dry savannah. Several tubes have been adapted as accommodation, their natural insulation maintaining a constant temperature year-round. The surrounding savannah woodland holds colonies of insectivorous bats that emerge at dusk in swirling columns.
