Bodh Gaya
Maroon-robed monks chanting beneath the descendant of the fig tree where Buddhism itself began.
The tree is 2,500 years old — or rather, its lineage is. The pipal under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment was cut, burned and replanted across the centuries, and the present Bodhi Tree is held to descend through a Sri Lankan sapling of the original. Monks in maroon sit beneath it at all hours, their chanting low and continuous.
Bodh Gaya is Buddhism's most sacred site — the place of the Buddha's enlightenment around 500 BCE. The Mahabodhi Temple, UNESCO-inscribed, stands beside the living Bodhi Tree, its shrine holding a gilded Buddha in the earth-touching posture. Around the complex the Buddhist nations have each built their own monastery — Thai, Japanese, Bhutanese, Tibetan — a world's worth of architecture on adjoining lanes.
