The pipal under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment was cut, burned, and replanted across the centuries, but the current Bodhi Tree at the Mahabodhi Temple grows from the same root stock. Bodh Gaya in Bihar is the most sacred site in Buddhism — the place where the Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment under a pipal tree in approximately 500 BCE.
