The ground beneath your feet is black and cracked, still warm in places where the 2014 eruption laid fresh lava across the village. Vines twist out of volcanic rubble inside the caldera of Pico do Fogo, Cape Verde's active stratovolcano. The air smells of sulphur and fermenting grapes, and somewhere behind a low stone wall, a family is pouring wine they grew at 1,680 metres altitude.
Chã das Caldeiras is a farming community living inside the collapsed crater of an active volcano on Fogo island, Cape Verde. The village was partially buried by lava during the 2014-15 eruption — hardened flow swallowed houses whose rooflines are still visible beneath the basalt. Residents returned and rebuilt. They cultivate grapes, figs, and coffee in volcanic soil that produces some of the most mineral-rich wine in the Atlantic, poured from unlabelled bottles in family living rooms. The caldera floor sits at roughly 1,680 metres, enclosed by the crater rim on three sides and the inner cone of Pico do Fogo on the fourth. Local guides lead the summit hike from the village doorstep — no transfer, no permit queue — straight up loose scree to 2,829 metres.
