The theatre is cut into the hillside in a perfect curve, fifty-five rows of limestone seats rising from a circular orchestra floor where a dropped pin carries to the back row. The theatre at Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC, seats 14,000 and remains acoustically functional without any amplification — a coin dropped on the orchestra floor is audible from the highest row, an effect verified by acoustic engineers and attributed to the limestone seating geometry filtering low-frequency noise. The surrounding sanctuary of Asclepius was antiquity's leading healing sanctuary; patients slept in the abaton chamber to receive dream-instructions for their cure, and votive offerings found on site record treatments for blindness, lameness, and infertility. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival stages ancient Greek drama in the original theatre from June through August, including performances in ancient Greek. The museum on site holds surgical instruments and anatomical votives from the healing sanctuary.
