India
A living fortress carved entirely from golden sandstone rising like a mirage from the Thar.
The city rises from the Thar Desert like a sandcastle that refused to crumble. Every wall, every balcony, every carved window is the same honey-gold sandstone, glowing amber in the afternoon sun and molten gold at sunset. Three thousand people still live inside the 12th-century fort walls.
Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is a living fort city โ one of the few fortifications in the world still inhabited as a residential neighbourhood. The Jaisalmer Fort, built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, contains entire streets of houses, temples, shops, and restaurants within its yellow sandstone ramparts. Below the fort, the city's havelis showcase the most intricate stone carving in Rajasthan: Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli, and Nathmal ki Haveli each demonstrate a style of jharokha (projecting balcony) carving so fine that the sandstone resembles lace. The Thar Desert begins at the city edge โ camel safaris to the Sam and Khuri sand dunes end at desert camps where Manganiyar folk musicians perform under open sky. The Jaisalmer War Museum documents the 1965 and 1971 battles fought in the surrounding desert.
