Oman
Frankincense valley terraces dropping into the Arabian Sea through clouds of monsoon mist.
The road follows the mountain spine and the frankincense terraces drop away on one side, down through layers of cloud towards the Arabian Sea. On the other side, the gravel plain stretches inland towards emptiness. This is the edge of Arabia's incense country, where the trees that once made this coast richer than gold still bleed white resin into stone-walled terraces.
Jebel Qamar is a mountain range running along the Dhofar coast west of Salalah, where the frankincense-producing Boswellia sacra trees grow on steep terraces carved into the seaward slopes. The mountain catches the full force of the khareef monsoon, creating dense cloud and mist conditions that persist for months, and the resulting microclimate supports vegetation that ranges from near-tropical on the coast to arid scrub on the summit. The road along the mountain spine offers some of Dhofar's most dramatic driving โ unfenced cliff edges, cloud-wrapped passes, and views that alternate between sea and desert depending on the side. Dhofari herders maintain seasonal camps on the plateau, grazing goats on the monsoon-fed grassland and harvesting frankincense from the wild trees using traditional tapping methods that date back millennia. Wild honey from cliff-face hives is sold at roadside by collectors who work the same routes as their ancestors.

The combination of mountain driving, frankincense groves, and Dhofari herder culture creates a day trip that feels like entering another world.
