Kaya Kinondo is a sacred forest of the Digo sub-group of the Mijikenda people, located near Diani Beach on Kenya's south coast. The kayas — fortified forest settlements — were established by the Mijikenda as refuge sites centuries ago, and their sacred groves have been maintained through oral tradition and spiritual guardianship ever since. UNESCO recognises the Mijikenda Kaya Forests as a World Heritage Site. Kaya Kinondo is one of the few open to visitors, with guided tours led by community elders who explain the forest's medicinal plants, spiritual significance, and ecological role. The 30-hectare remnant of coastal lowland forest supports plant species that have disappeared from the surrounding cleared landscape.
