The forest closes behind you. Light filters down in green-gold shafts, the air thick with damp earth and centuries of leaf fall. Entry follows Digo protocol — shoes off, a black cloth tied at the waist, an elder leading the way. You step into a place kept sacred and deliberately hidden for five hundred years.
Kaya Kinondo is a sacred forest of the Digo, one of the nine Mijikenda peoples whose fortified kaya settlements — refuge villages hidden in forest — anchor the UNESCO-listed Sacred Mijikenda Kaya Forests. Most kayas remain closed to outsiders; Kinondo is among the few that receive visitors — the community decides the terms, an elder leads. The protocols are the experience: bare feet, the borrowed cloth, the pauses for blessing — and around them a 30-hectare remnant of ancient coastal forest whose medicinal trees and threatened species have vanished from the cleared land outside. It stands minutes from Diani's resort strip and several centuries away from it. The guiding trust returns every shilling to the custodian families.
