Lake Nakuru National Park
Rhinos browse beneath fever trees where a Rift lake sometimes blushes pink with flamingos.
From the escarpment road the lake spreads silver in its bowl of volcanic ridges, and on the good days a living border of lesser flamingos makes the waterline blush. The alkaline shallows mirror yellow-barked acacias, and the fever-tree woodland is black rhino country — a fenced sanctuary holding some of Kenya's most closely guarded animals.
Lake Nakuru sits on the Rift Valley floor at 1,754 metres, a shallow soda lake wrapped in 188 compact square kilometres of park. It was once the world's greatest flamingo spectacle — gatherings estimated in the millions — until rising lake levels in recent years diluted the alkaline chemistry; the birds still come, in numbers that swing with the water, and the spectacle migrates up the valley to Bogoria in between. What never wavers is the sanctuary: fenced and patrolled, Nakuru protects both black and white rhino, and the Rothschild's giraffe reintroduced here in 1977 still browse the acacia edges. Makalia's seasonal waterfall closes the southern loop among fig trees.
