Lake Nakuru National Park

From the escarpment road, the lake appears rimmed in pink — a living border of lesser flamingos so dense the waterline seems to blush. The alkaline shallows mirror the yellow-barked acacias along the shore, and somewhere in the fever tree woodland, a black rhino browses with the slow certainty of an animal that has nowhere else to be.
Lake Nakuru National Park sits in the floor of Kenya's Rift Valley, enclosing a shallow alkaline lake whose cyanobacteria blooms sustain populations of lesser and greater flamingos that can number over a million. The park is also one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries, fenced to protect both black and white rhino populations. Its compact 188 square kilometres pack in acacia woodland, grassland, rocky cliffs, and the lake itself. Makalia Falls at the park's southern end feeds a seasonal waterfall surrounded by fig trees. The surrounding Rift Valley escarpment provides dramatic context — the lake sits at 1,754 metres above sea level, with volcanic ridges rising steeply on either side.

Nakuru's compact layout means a single game drive can cover flamingos, rhinos, and the escarpment viewpoint in one morning. Solo travellers on a budget can base themselves in Nakuru town and visit on day trips.

- Lake Nakuru once supported up to 2 million lesser flamingos — one of the greatest bird spectacles on Earth. The alkaline chemistry still sustains large seasonal gatherings visible from the lake's rim.
- The park holds both black and white rhino — one of the few places in Africa to see both species — with active breeding populations protected since dedicated programmes began in the 1980s.
- Rothschild's giraffe, among the world's most endangered giraffe subspecies, was reintroduced to Nakuru in 1977 and the population has since grown to over 80 individuals.
- At 160 kilometres from Nairobi, Nakuru is the most accessible major wildlife reserve from the capital — a full day trip with time for both the lake and the surrounding woodland.
