Thirty-six towers rise directly from the Mediterranean waterline, their crenellations sharp against the sky, the sea lapping at the base of walls that have stood since the 3rd century. Mamure Castle occupies a strip of coast so narrow that the fortress feels like it was built by the sea itself. Walk the ramparts and the drop on one side is salt water, on the other, banana groves.
Mamure Castle near Anamur is the best-preserved medieval fortress on the entire Turkish Mediterranean coast. Originally a Roman fortification, it was rebuilt and expanded by Armenian, Seljuk, and Karamanoğlu rulers between the 12th and 14th centuries, resulting in a layered structure of three linked courtyards, a mosque, a hamam, and those thirty-six towers. The castle's completeness — walls intact, towers standing, moat still traceable — sets it apart from the ruined remains of most Cilician fortifications. Anamur itself is known for producing Turkey's only commercial bananas, grown in the micro-climate created by the Taurus Mountains shielding the coast. The combination of intact medieval architecture, empty beaches, and banana-plantation landscape makes this stretch of coastline one of the least-known and most rewarding in the country.
