Eight hundred Cape vultures nest on one cliff — wingspans wider than a human is tall.

The thermals carry them up from the Kransberg cliffs in spiralling columns — eight hundred Cape vultures, wingspans stretching nearly three metres, riding the warm air above the Waterberg bushveld. Below, elephants move through cycad groves and yellowwood forest at altitudes where the air cools noticeably from the lowveld heat. Marakele National Park in South Africa's Limpopo province is a mountain wilderness where the horizon drops away in every direction.

Marakele is the only Big Five national park in South Africa set in highland mountain terrain, its altitude climbing from 1,050 metres on the western plains to 2,088 metres at the Kransberg summit. The Cape vulture colony on Kransberg Ridge — approximately 800 breeding pairs — is the largest in the world, visible from the Lenong Viewpoint via a winding mountain pass. The Teleki Valley loop road threads through habitat where sable antelope and tsessebe graze alongside elephant, an unusual combination for a single circuit. The park forms part of the UNESCO-designated Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, and its malaria-free status makes it one of the few Big Five destinations in the country safe for young children year-round.
