A marble gateway stands unfinished on the harbour, abandoned mid-construction 2,500 years ago.

The Portara stands alone on the headland — a six-metre marble gateway framing nothing but sky and sea, the last surviving element of a temple abandoned mid-construction twenty-five centuries ago. Behind it, the largest island in the Cyclades unfolds: green valleys, Venetian towers, and mountain villages where cheese ages in caves.

Naxos is the only Cycladic island with enough water to be fully agriculturally self-sufficient, and its fertile interior produces potatoes, Arseniko cheese, and Kitron liqueur distilled from the citron fruit. The Portara dates to a Temple of Apollo begun around 530 BC by the tyrant Lygdamis and never completed. The Melanes quarry holds two unfinished marble kouroi — monumental statues abandoned in the 6th century BC that still lie on the hillside where they were being carved. The Venetian Kastro in Naxos Town has been continuously inhabited since the 13th century, with descendants of the original Venetian colonists still living inside its walls.

Kitron tasting in Chalki village, hiking to the unfinished kouroi, and kite-surfing at Mikri Vigla where the meltemi channels along the coast.

Why This Place
  • The Portara — a 6-metre marble gateway — is the only surviving element of a Temple of Apollo begun around 530 BC and abandoned when the tyrant Lygdamis died.
  • Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades at 429 square kilometres and the only one with enough water to be fully agriculturally self-sufficient.
  • The Melanes quarry holds two unfinished marble kouroi (monumental statues) abandoned in the 6th century BC — they still lie on the hillside exactly where they were left.
  • The Venetian Kastro in Naxos Town has been inhabited since the 13th century — families descended from the original Venetian colonists still live inside its walls.
What to Eat

Arseniko cheese aged in caves until sharp and crumbly, paired with Naxian citron spoon sweet.

Potato croquettes made from the island's famous potatoes — creamy inside, golden-crisp outside.

Kitron liqueur distilled from the citron fruit that only thrives here, sipped cold after dinner.
