Greece
A marble gateway stands unfinished on the harbour, abandoned mid-construction 2,500 years ago.
The Portara stands alone on the headland — a six-metre marble gateway framing nothing but sky and sea, the last surviving element of a temple abandoned mid-construction twenty-five centuries ago. Behind it, the largest island in the Cyclades unfolds: green valleys, Venetian towers, and mountain villages where cheese ages in caves.
Naxos is the only Cycladic island with enough water to be fully agriculturally self-sufficient, and its fertile interior produces potatoes, Arseniko cheese, and Kitron liqueur distilled from the citron fruit. The Portara dates to a Temple of Apollo begun around 530 BC by the tyrant Lygdamis and never completed. The Melanes quarry holds two unfinished marble kouroi — monumental statues abandoned in the 6th century BC that still lie on the hillside where they were being carved. The Venetian Kastro in Naxos Town has been continuously inhabited since the 13th century, with descendants of the original Venetian colonists still living inside its walls.

Family
The wide, shallow beaches of the western coast are ideal for young children, the Venetian Kastro has a museum scaled for families, and the island produces excellent local food.
