Thailand
A royal pavilion bathed in a single shaft of sunlight inside a collapsed cavern.
The light falls in a single shaft through the collapsed cavern roof, illuminating a small wooden pavilion built for a king who never came. Phraya Nakhon Cave in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province holds one of Thailand's most photographed moments — a 19th-century royal sala bathed in celestial light inside a cathedral-sized cave.
Phraya Nakhon Cave sits inside Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, reachable by a steep forty-five-minute hike through coastal forest from Laem Sala Beach (itself accessible only by boat). The cave is a collapsed karst cavern with two large sinkholes in the roof. The Kuha Karuhas pavilion — built in 1890 for King Chulalongkorn's visit — sits beneath the main sinkhole, where morning sunlight creates a dramatic spotlight effect between approximately 10:30 and 11:30. The cave's lower chamber holds stalactites and a second, smaller sinkhole. The surrounding national park encompasses 300 limestone peaks rising from coastal marshland, with hiking trails, mangrove boardwalks, and some of Thailand's most intact freshwater wetlands.
Couple
Timing your arrival for the light shaft creates a shared moment of genuine awe. The boat ride, the jungle hike, and the cave's revelation at the end feel like a private pilgrimage for two.
Solo
The physical effort to reach the cave — boat, hike, descent — filters out the casual visitors. Arriving alone when the light hits the pavilion is one of Thailand's most singular visual experiences.
