Río Celeste, in Costa Rica's Northern Highlands, is the result of two colourless rivers meeting and producing something that looks physically impossible.
The supernatural blue of Río Celeste is caused by a volcanic reaction: when the acidic Quebrada Agria meets the mineral-rich Río Sour, suspended particles of aluminosilicate scatter light at a wavelength that produces an intense turquoise visible only at certain depths and angles. The effect is not a dye or a mineral deposit but a trick of physics — scoop the water into a glass and it turns clear. The river runs through Tenorio Volcano National Park, a 12,871-hectare protected area of primary rainforest far less visited than Monteverde or Arenal. The 6-kilometre trail descends through dense forest to the waterfall, the Blue Lagoon, and the Teñidero — the exact point where the two rivers converge and the colour begins. The nearby village of Bijagua serves as a quiet base, with family-run lodges and cacao farms offering tours that reveal how altitude transforms the flavour of raw chocolate.
