Japan
A solitary volcanic cone rising from the Sea of Japan like a misplaced Fuji.
The mountain rises from the sea without preamble. No foothills, no approach — just 1,721 metres of volcanic cone climbing straight from the waterline into the clouds. Rishiri Island sits off the northern tip of Hokkaido, and its peak is visible from sixty kilometres away, a compass point for fishermen and a challenge for climbers who want their summits earned.
Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park protects the island and its surrounding waters, where the cold Liman Current supports kelp forests that produce some of Hokkaido's finest sea urchin. The summit trail is a full-day challenge that climbs through alpine meadows and scree fields to a crater rim with views spanning the Sea of Japan. The island's fishing communities harvest kombu kelp and uni from the surrounding waters — Rishiri kombu is graded so highly that it is used as the base for dashi in Kyoto's finest kaiseki restaurants. The population is under 5,000, with no traffic lights and no chain businesses.
Solo
The summit scramble demands a full day of effort. Solo climbers earn a crater-rim view that feels like standing at the end of the world.
Couple
