South Korea
A terrifying suspension bridge swaying between two knife-edge volcanic peaks surrounded by the southern sea.
The suspension bridge sways between two volcanic peaks. Below, the Hallyeo strait churns. Ahead, the ridge narrows to a knife-edge where fixed cables are the only thing between the trail and a vertical drop into the southern sea.
Saryangdo is a small island accessible by 20-minute ferry from Tongyeong, known for a ridge traverse that links two volcanic peaks via exposed knife-edge trail sections and a suspension bridge at 380 metres elevation. The bridge connects the peaks above the Hallyeo waterway, offering views across the southern archipelago that extend to the horizon. The ridge traverse takes 3-4 hours with sections requiring cable handholds and a head for heights — exposure is genuine and continuous. The island has no significant infrastructure beyond the trail and a small harbour settlement. Sea eel from the surrounding strait, grilled until the skin chars, is the signature post-hike meal. The combination of technical terrain, genuine exposure, and island isolation creates one of Korea's most adrenaline-charged day hikes.
Solo
The exposed ridge demands personal focus and steady nerve. Solo hikers set their own pace on sections where hesitation is costly.
