Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania protects one of only two sites on Earth where wild chimpanzees can be tracked on foot in mountain forest habitat. Japanese researchers began habituating the M-group community in 1965, and today the park's chimps are studied by scientists and visited by small groups who trek through dense forest with no vehicles, no roads, and no barriers. The only access is by boat across Lake Tanganyika, the world's second-deepest lake, where 350 endemic cichlid species populate waters with visibility comparable to coral reef. Beach camps sit where the forest meets the lakeshore. After morning tracking, visitors swim in freshwater so clear it redefines the word.
