Nemrut Crater Lakes

Two lakes inside a volcanic crater, side by side, one warm enough to swim, one ice-cold.

The rim of the caldera drops away and two lakes fill the bowl below — one steaming, one still. Steam rises from the warm lake in slow columns while the cold lake beside it sits flat and blue, untouched. Nemrut Crater Lakes in Eastern Turkey is a place of geological contradictions, where you can swim in one lake and watch geothermal vents bubble in the other.

Nemrut Dağı (not to be confused with the Mount Nemrut of the stone heads further west) is an extinct volcano near the shore of Lake Van with a 7-kilometre-wide caldera containing two lakes at radically different temperatures. The hot lake, Sıcak Göl, is fed by active geothermal vents and maintains surface temperatures around 60°C. The cold lake, Soğuk Göl, is cool enough for swimming even in midsummer. The crater rim at 2,250 metres offers 360-degree views across Lake Van and the Eastern Anatolian plateau. Few visitors make the journey — the crater receives a fraction of the traffic of its more famous namesake, despite being one of Turkey's most surreal natural landscapes.

Solo

The kind of off-grid destination that rewards self-sufficiency — camp on the crater rim, watch steam rise at dawn, and have the caldera almost entirely to yourself.

Friends

Family

Older children with hiking experience will find the crater walk and the two-lake contrast genuinely mind-expanding — natural science in real time, no textbook required.
