This chemical oddity means its eruptions run at roughly 500°C — less than half the temperature of basaltic lava — and the molten rock emerges black, turning white as it weathers. The Maasai name translates as 'Mountain of God,' and the peak remains an active site of spiritual pilgrimage. Standing at 2,962 metres above the southern shore of Lake Natron, the overnight summit climb gains over 1,700 metres of elevation on steep, loose volcanic scree. The descent reveals the Rift Valley spread below: Lake Natron's red waters, the Crater Highlands, and the Serengeti plain stretching west.
