Morocco
A silver-spired oasis where the palmery stretches thirty kilometres along the Todra River.
The palmery extends like a green scar through red desert — thirty kilometres of date palms, irrigated fields, and mud-brick settlements following the Todra River through arid terrain that should not support this much life. Tinghir sits at the palmery's heart, a silver-spired town where minarets rise above palm canopies and the souk operates with the unhurried efficiency of a place that has been trading dates and silver for centuries.
Tinghir is an oasis town in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, situated at the mouth of the Todra Gorge. The town's palmery extends roughly thirty kilometres along the Todra River, supporting one of the largest continuous date-palm groves in southern Morocco. Tinghir's mellah (Jewish quarter) preserves the architecture of a once-thriving community, and the town's silver jewellery tradition reflects this heritage. The kasbah district above the modern town offers panoramic views across the palmery. Tinghir serves as the primary base for visiting the Todra Gorge, fifteen kilometres to the north, and is a stop on the Route des Kasbahs between Ouarzazate and Errachidia.
Solo
Walking the palmery alone, discovering kasbahs, and exploring the mellah. Tinghir offers depth that most visitors miss by driving straight through to the gorge.
