Tso Moriri lies at 4,522 metres in Ladakh's Changthang, nineteen kilometres long and seven wide, ringed by bare brown mountains. The Changpa camp along its southern shore with the pashmina goats whose fibre becomes the world's most expensive textile. In summer the lake's islands take breeding bar-headed geese — birds recorded crossing the Himalaya itself on migration — with Brahminy ducks working the shallows, and Korzok's small monastery watches it all from the western shore.
