India
Nomadic herders grazing pashmina goats beside a high-altitude saltwater lake reflecting barren Himalayan peaks.
The lake shifts from sapphire to turquoise as the clouds move. On the shore, Changpa nomads herd the goats whose undercoat becomes the world's finest pashmina. No shops. No phone signal. Just a monastery, a lake, and silence at 4,500 metres.
Tso Moriri is a high-altitude saltwater lake in Ladakh's Changthang Plateau, sitting at 4,522 metres in a landscape of barren brown mountains and wind-scoured steppe. The Changpa nomads who camp along the lake's southern shore herd pashmina goats β the source of the cashmere fibre that becomes some of the world's most expensive textiles. Bar-headed geese breed on the lake's islands; these birds migrate over the Himalayas at altitudes exceeding 7,000 metres. The small Korzok Monastery overlooks the lake from the western shore, its whitewashed walls a stark contrast to the brown landscape. No permanent settlements exist here β the nomads move seasonally, and the few visitors camp or stay in tents. A permit is required, obtained in Leh.
Solo
Tso Moriri's utter remoteness and silence β no infrastructure, no crowds, no sound but wind β is a solo traveller's meditation.
Friends
The overland journey from Leh, the camping, and the shared experience of altitude and isolation make Tso Moriri compelling for adventure-minded groups.
